Q&As
Why did you choose to study in Florence?
I chose to study in Florence as coming from an Italian-American household, I felt like it would not only be a great opportunity to reconnect with my heritage but also explore the birthplace of the renaissance. Studying political science and religious studies Florence had been one of my dream places to visit as its rich cultural history has influenced our modern world and I wanted to be able to explore what was so unique about the city that it led to such innovation. Not to mention, it is such a beautiful and vibrant city filled with so much life.
How did studying away support your academic growth?
Studying abroad in Florence has given me the opportunity to explore the creative side of my academics that I haven’t had the ability to while pursuing political science. Being able to take a class on renaissance art or a photography class in one of the most beautiful cities in the world allowed me to appreciate the more artistic side of our academics which we don’t normally get to tap into. I truly believe this allowed me to grow as a person greatly improving my perspectives and appreciation for interdisciplinary learning.
What did you learn about yourself during your study away experience, especially through any challenges or major cultural adjustments?
During my study away experience at Florence, I learned that I am far more adaptable than I had realized previously. It being my first time in Europe I was incredibly nervous about transitioning to a completely new country, new routine, and new collection of people. However, being able to learn a new language, explore a new city, and adapt to a new culture all at once I realized how much more capable I was then I had expected.
Briefly describe a typical day and your favorite part of daily life in your program location.
A typical day for me began with a run along the Arno River, taking in the beautiful sights of Florence as the sun began to rise. From there, my friends and I would usually have breakfast before walking to class. Our daily walk to the Stanford in Florence center took us past the magnificent Duomo and other historic landmarks. In between classes, we’d often grab a cornetto (croissant) and a cappuccino to help fuel us. After class, we’d usually pick up a panino and head to a nearby boba shop to get our schoolwork done. Once that was finished, we’d explore the city or visit a museum—or sometimes even attend an opera. At night, the streets came alive with music and dancing that truly felt like something out of a movie which was one of my favorite parts of my typical day.
If applicable, how did participating in an internship, volunteership or experiential-based project help you grow professionally? What specific skills did you gain?
N/A.
What was the most essential item you took with you on the program?
The most essential item I had taken with me was my journal because it not only helped me capture my favorite memories but has allowed me to reflect to this day on my experiences abroad.
What advice would you give students who are considering studying away?
Many times at Stanford we can become so busy and so focused on our future success that we don’t take the time to appreciate how young we truly are. Being away in Florence and studying abroad in general, I believe, allows you to further appreciate your college experience . While it may feel strange to leave a campus you're so accustomed to, stepping outside your routine and starting fresh I truly believe allows for the greatest personal growth.
